Psoriasis and Seasonal Changes: How to Protect Your Skin Health in Winter and Summer

One of the factors that affect the course of psoriasis is seasonal changes. While the dry air/low humidity of winter can worsen symptoms, the sun, hot weather and sweating of summer create different effects.
Psoriasis in the winter months
Cold weather and skin dryness (increased itching/flaking/redness), insufficient sunlight (missing out on the benefits of UV), and cold weather and cracking (which can trigger the disease). Tips: using a rich/oily moisturizer, lukewarm water (avoid hot water), spending measured time outdoors on sunny days, home humidifiers, and avoiding harsh chemical soaps.
Psoriasis in the summer months
Sun exposure (UV can reduce inflammation, but too much leads to burns/worsening), hot weather/sweating (can increase irritation), sunburn (psoriatic skin is more sensitive), and chlorinated/sea water (chlorine is drying, while sea water is soothing for some patients). Tips: SPF 30+ sunscreen, controlling sweating (a cool environment, frequent showers), light cotton clothing, moisturizing after swimming, and skin cleansing/moisturizing.
Conclusion
With proper skin care and lifestyle, it is possible to adapt to seasonal changes. Keeping the skin moist in winter and protecting it from the sun in summer are important steps. Since each individual’s skin structure is different, adapting it to your own needs will give the best results. If there is seasonal worsening, you should consult a specialist.
