Rheumatism and Nutrition

Rheumatism is a chronic disorder that causes pain, swelling and restricted movement in the joints.

Its symptoms

Pain/tenderness in the joints, swelling/redness, restricted movement, morning stiffness, and fatigue/weakness.

Its causes

The exact cause is not fully known; genetic predisposition, immune system disorders and environmental factors play an important role. In some cases, infection/trauma can trigger it.

Treatment methods

The goal is to relieve pain, preserve joint function and slow progression. Drug therapy (painkillers, anti-inflammatories, immunosuppressants), physical therapy/rehabilitation, exercise programs, surgery (in advanced cases), and complementary support (acupuncture, massage).

The effects of nutrition

Anti-inflammatory foods can help ease symptoms. A diet rich in omega-3, antioxidants and vitamins is recommended: fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel), olive oil/avocado, fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains/legumes, and nuts (walnuts, almonds).
